JOJI INC

JOJI INC est une compagnie chorégraphique et scénographique créée en 1998 par Johanne Saunier et Jim Clayburgh. Elle examine comment l'architecture et la technologie entourent le corps humain, et comment un corps peut exister dans cet environnement « culturel ».

JOJI INC a produit une douzaine de pièces qui explorent ces idées à travers le film, la vidéo, le son, la musique, le design et le mouvement en contexte de performance — souvent en dialogue avec des compositeurs vivants.

Première pièce solo en 1998 : Sans la Voix des Maîtres, interprétée par Johanne Saunier d'après le film « Harakiri » de Kobayashi (1963). 1999 Chorée/Salto, concert chorégraphié avec Stéphane Ginsburgh, Renaud de Putter et Garth Knox. 2000 Final Scene, Prix d'Auteur du Conseil général de Seine-Saint-Denis (Bagnolet).

Suivent notamment Landscape with 4 Figures (2001), It's like (2002–2004), le cycle Erase-E(x) avec The Wooster Group, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Isabella Soupart, Kurt D'Haeseleer et Georges Aperghis, puis Lolita (2008), Line of Oblivion (2010), Musée en Chantier (2011) et Modern Dance avec Mathurin Bolze (2012).

JOJI INC is a choreographic and scenographic focused company created by Johanne Saunier and Jim Clayburgh in 1998, that examines how architecture, and technology surround the human body and how a body can exist in that "cultural" environment.

JOJI INC produced 12 pieces which examined how these ideas can be reflected in film, video, sound, music, design and movement when placed in a performance context. Many of these pieces have and will continue to segue with living composers.

JOJI INC created its first solo piece in 1998, Sans la Voix des Maîtres, interpreted by Johanne Saunier based on scenes from the film "Harakiri" by Kobayashi, 1963. 1999 Chorée/Salto, a choreographed musical concert created with the pianist Stéphane Ginsburgh, the composer Renaud de Putter and the viola player Garth Knox (Arditti Quartet). 2000 Final Scene, a piece for three female dancers in the continuation of the solo, which won the Prix d'Auteur du Conseil général de Seine-Saint-Denis (Bagnolet).

2001 Landscape with 4 Figures — a piece for 4 dancers and a Viole d'Amour player (Garth Knox) improvising on Philippe Boesmans' string quartet "Summer Dreams". 2002 It's like, for 3 female dancers and an actress via Internet connection, within a square installation of veils. 2003 Creation of the film It's like, directed by JOJI INC and Michel de Wouters.

2004 It's like./ l'installation (Atomium Bruxelles); SWOT solo with a rope (Festival Avignon off); Erase-E(x) 1 a solo with Johanne Saunier choreographed by the Wooster Group of New York, created in Avignon 2004 "Sujet à Vif". 2005 Erase-E(x) 1, 2, 3 a multi-part performance with The Wooster Group, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, and Isabella Soupart, Festival Avignon 05. 2006 Erase-E(x) 4 by Kurt D'Haeseleer, Théâtre de la Ville Paris. 2007 Erase-E(x) 5, 6 by composer Georges Aperghis and Johanne Saunier at the Biennale de Charleroi-Danses.

2008 Lolita, an opera staged by Jim Clayburgh, choreographed by Johanne Saunier, music and libretto by Joshua Fineberg. 2010 Line of Oblivion based on the Carlos Fuentes text, music by Arturo Fuentes. 2011 Musée en Chantier with Cécile Goossens. 2012 Modern Dance, a collaboration with Mathurin Bolze.

Depuis 1986, Johanne Saunier danse dans la Compagnie Rosas d'Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, avec qui elle continue de collaborer comme assistante et répétitrice. Elle crée JOJI INC avec Jim Clayburgh ; la compagnie reçoit en 2000 le prix Seine-Saint-Denis / Bagnolet à Paris.

Son projet Erase-E(X) est particulièrement remarqué, créé avec divers artistes — The Wooster Group (NY), Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Georges Aperghis, le vidéaste Kurt d'Haeseleer. Elle est l'interprète d'opéras contemporains mis en scène par Luc Bondy, Guy Cassiers, Georges Aperghis (depuis 2002), Jim Clayburgh, François Sarhan / Quatuor Diotima.

Elle enseigne à P.A.R.T.S. à Bruxelles et dans d'autres écoles européennes. Ses Ballets Confidentiels sont des concerts chorégraphiques joués tous azimuts dans des lieux insolites avec musique live. Elle assiste le metteur en scène français Jean-François Sivadier sur ses opéras et ses pièces de théâtre depuis 2010.

En 2018, La légende du Roi Dragon d'Arthur Lavandier est sa première mise en scène pour l'Opéra de Lille et Bordeaux, projet écrit pour 216 enfants. Elle remet en scène 300 enfants de Finoreille à Lille en 2023–2025. Elle reçoit le prix SACD de la chorégraphie en 2021.

Johanne Saunier — dancer, choreographer, director. She has danced for more than 12 years for Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / Rosas, with whom she continues to work as an assistant. In 1998 she started JOJI INC with Jim Clayburgh, one of the founders of New York's The Wooster Group. Together they created many performances shown and honored internationally.

She has collaborated with artists including Guy Cassiers, Georges Aperghis, Ictus Ensemble, Luc Bondy, and others. She staged her first opera with 216 children to the music of Arthur Lavandier — La légende du Roi Dragon — in Lille & Bordeaux, and continues staging Finoreille projects (Okilele, Le coq et l'arlequin, À l'ombre du Baobab). She is movement collaborator for French director JF Sivadier since 2010.

She is associated with singer Eléonore Lemaire for Ballets Confidentiels. She received the SACD choreographic prize in 2021.

Jim Clayburgh is a founding member of The Wooster Group and was their resident designer from 1976 to 1995. His designs include The Hairy Ape, Finished Story, Emperor Jones and Brace Up. Prior to that there were the three sections of The Road to Immortality which include Route 1 & 9 (The last act), L.S.D. (Just the high points…) and Frank Dell's, The Temptation of St. Antony, Pt. Judith and the trilogy Three Places in Rhode Island. His work with them has included designs for about 80 venues in Europe, Asia and South America.

In addition to his work with The Wooster Group, Mr. Clayburgh has designed theater pieces at the Salzburg Festival, Pepsico Festival, The New York Shakespeare Festival, The Ontological-Hysteric Theater, Creation Company, Mabou Mines and Second Stage, including work directed by Richard Foreman, David Rabe, Des McAnuff, Wilford Leach, Matthew Maguire, Hal Hartley, Isabella Soupart, and Jeffrey M. Jones.

He has designed lighting for dance pieces by Rosas, Compagnie Michèle Anne de Mey, Compagnie Pierre Droulers, JOJI INC, Wim Vandekeybus, Ensemble Ictus and Walpurgis, as well as for Ballet de Genève and EN-KNAP (Slovenia).

In opera, his work includes Aventures / Nouvelles Aventures of Ligeti, produced by the Monnaie/Munt in Brussels, for which he conceived and co-directed with Pierre Droulers and designed the décor, lighting and costumes. He designed the lighting for Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo of Cavalieri, also at the Monnaie/Munt.

In 2008 he directed and designed LOLITA, an imagined opera based on the novel by Nabokov, composed by Joshua Fineberg, and Walking on Rocks, a JOJI INC piece exploring the ownership of movement. He was part of the renovation design team for Flagey and Bozar in Brussels (2000–2006). He holds a BA from Claremont McKenna College and an MFA in Theater Design from NYU, and received an Obie Award for Sustained Achievement in design.

Jim Clayburgh est membre fondateur de The Wooster Group et en a été le scénographe résident de 1976 à 1995. Son travail avec la compagnie a été présenté dans une soixantaine de lieux en Europe, Asie et Amérique du Sud.
